GYG Winning the Australian Mexican war over Zambrero

Guzman Y Gomez is a brand on a mission.

Guzman Y Gomez is a brand on a mission, with its energetic and inspirational CEO Steven Marks, going from strength to strength reaffirmed by its recent valuation of nearly a billion AUD and serious international expansion plans underway.

It’s competition is increasingly being left behind, particularly in the Australian market. When Zambrero was at its prime, it lead the way in the growth of Mexican cuisine across Australia. It was one of the darlings of the Australian franchising community. Now with just under 200 locations, its reach is wide but it’s not showing the promise it once did with lacklustre marketing, poor penetration in the major cities and a number of under-performing locations having to be taken back by head office – Sam Prince, it’s founder, needs to reinvent his brand or more will follow.

The next battleground is shaping up to be the US where Zambrero has struggled having to close their second location in the northeast and only have opened 2 others after being in the market for 4 years. GYG with strong capital reserves and a seasoned board of the likes of Bruce Buchanan, former CEO of Jetstar and Guy Russo, former CEO of McDonald’s look’s like the one to take on the big US brands.
