Salt Lake City, UT – September 2, 2026 – Proline Range Hoods has completed a 14-unit island range hood package for a newly built teaching kitchen at a high school in Bartlett, Illinois. The lab supports the school’s family and consumer sciences program, the curriculum widely known as home economics. The room pairs 14 PLJI 103 36-inch ducted island hoods with matching chimney assemblies, roof caps and backdraft dampers, giving every student cooking station a dedicated exhaust run.

Teaching kitchens present a ventilation requirement that residential kitchens do not. Instead of one cook at one range, a dozen or more stations operate simultaneously, several times a day, five days a week. Heat, steam and cooking odors accumulate quickly, and a lab that vents poorly becomes difficult to teach in within minutes of the first burner being lit.

Proline worked with the project team during the specification phase to size the package for that pattern of use. Each PLJI 103 station is rated at up to 1,200 CFM with a dual-blower configuration and four speed settings, allowing instructors to run lower speeds for a baking unit and higher speeds for high-heat cooking without over-ventilating the room. The hoods use stainless steel baffle filters rather than the mesh filters found in lighter-duty equipment; baffle filters separate grease by forcing a change in airflow direction and are dishwasher-safe, which matters in a lab where cleanup is part of the coursework.

Because the stations sit in an island configuration rather than against a wall, the hoods are suspended from the ceiling on adjustable chimney assemblies. Proline supplied the chimneys sized to the lab’s ceiling height, and aluminum backdraft dampers to complete each run. The dampers open on airflow and close by gravity, sealing the duct when a hood is idle. Across 14 runs in an Illinois climate, that seal reduces the conditioned air lost through open ductwork when the lab is not in use.

Sourcing the hoods, chimneys, and dampers as a single coordinated package also affected the installation. Rather than matching components from multiple suppliers across 14 identical runs, installers received the same kit for every station, with duct diameters and mounting hardware already aligned.

“Fourteen identical stations should mean one installation problem solved fourteen times, not fourteen separate ones,” said Carson Zuro, Operations Manager at Proline Range Hoods. “Sourcing the whole run together is what makes that true – the duct sizes match, the hardware matches, and nobody’s on the phone hunting for a part that fits, ultimately making the job install that much more effecient.”

The PLJI 103 is available in 36-inch, 42-inch, 48-inch, 54-inch and 60-inch widths. Proline works with contractors, designers, and institutional buyers on multi-unit ventilation projects of this type.
